Valentine's Day is next Sunday!

by Regina 6. February 2016 06:14

It's fun (and sort of crazy!) that Superbowl 50 is in our backyard, but don't forget that Valentine's Day next weekend! What are your plans?

Our Chocolate Hearts is the perfect dessert to split after your Valentine's Day meal. Inspired by our most popular cake, our Chocolate on Chocolate, we dressed it up with a drizzle of raspberry icing.

Another Valentine's Day exclusive is our mini heart-shaped cream puffs. Cute for an office party or just you favorite co-workers!

If you're in a sharing mood, we'll also be baking our Raspberry Sandwiches, Half Dips and Gingerbread cookies in heart shapes as well. Please pre-order, especially if you are thinking about large quantities!

Other great options include our Strawberry Mousse (available in indiivdual and 6" heart sizes) and Tiramisu Cheesecake.

Finally, if you have yet to try our Sweetheart Cake, you must try it sometime this month as it is a February exclusive. We take our famous Chocolate on Chocolate recipe and add raspbery jam in the middle, and decorate it with a Kirsch Cream Cheese frosting instead. Available in all sizes, including cupcakes!

Please place your orders no later than Thursday. Feel free to call our stores or check out our website if you have any questions.

Buche de Noel Perfect Holiday Dessert

by Regina 16. December 2014 02:21

Looking for a festive dessert that will impress your guests at your holiday dinner? Look no further.

Our Buche de Noels and Yule Logs are the perfect centerpieces to your dinner table. Edible art, even. And only made this time of year.

Completely hand crafted and made from scratch, these fun desserts are available in two sizes (small serving 6-8, large 14-16) and nine flavors. For those of us who can't get enough chocolate, I recommend ordering the Buche de Noel. Slightly higher in price but definitely more authentic looking if we're going to replicate a log. However, if you're not so big on chocolate or want to go with a cheaper option, the Yule Log is the exact same on the inside and decorated with whipped cream on the outside.

See behind-the-scenes and the step-by-step process we take to create these beauties here.

Like all of our cakes, both of these holiday desserts are made fresh and never frozen. Because their labor-intensive, several others bakeries bake these cakes ahead of time to meet demands. For us, freshness is not something we are willing to compromise even if that means we can't meet our demand and potential orders turned away. This means two things for you. 1) Quantities are limited. We are only able to take a certain amount of orders to keep all of them fresh, so once we hit that number, we are sold out. If you know you need one, place the order ASAP! And 2) Pick-ups on Christmas Eve must be made after 2pm. This is simply because we will still be baking and assembling on the morning of the 24th.

More information, including what flavors are avaiable, can be found on our website. Feel free to call or walk-in to place your orders. Hope to see you on Christmas Eve and Happy Holidays!

July 4th Weekend - Yes, We're Open!

by Regina 23. June 2014 05:33

All of our stores will be open until 5pm on Friday, July 4th. Before you fire up those BBQ grills, stop by our Rivermark/Santa Clara or Fremont locations for HOLIDAY BRUNCH! Breakfast usually ends at 10:30am on weekdays but since it's a holiday, we will extend breakfast hours until 3pm. After 3pm, we'll remain open until 5pm for anyone who needs to pick up desserts for your July 4th parties. (Please note: Palo Alto will not be serving lunch)

Here are some dessert ideas, inspired by Independence Day:

Cupcakes with the American flag! These are our "white" cupcakes pictured above but we can replicate it on any cupcake.

These July-4th-inspired Trifle Cups only show up once a year and they are my favorite variation. Orange Almond cake, fresh blueberries, vanilla custard and fresh strawberries. Pre-order these if you want them because they'll be gone!

Lastly, ask us to decorate your sheet cakes like the American Flag, made with fresh raspberries and blueberries, for a small fee. The cake shown above is the Banana Custard Cream but the White Strawberry Cream is very popular this time of year (with fresh strawberries!) as is our Very Berry Trifle Cake (seasonal).

As always, please place your orders at least 2-days in advance to guarantee most items. Hope everyone has a relaxing and safe 3-day weekend!

Our First Official Flourless Dessert: Chocolate Verrines

by Regina 14. March 2014 04:16

Today marks the launch date of our first official flourless dessert! You've been asking and asking for gluten-free desserts and finally, with much anticipation, we launched our first dessert today.

Our Chocolate Verrine is perfect for a chocolate-holic, eating gluten-free or not. It is a chocolate-lover's dream in a cup. First, we start with a thick layer of our decadent chocolate ganache, then a generous portion of a newly developed chocolate mousse and finally topped off with chocolate whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles. Phew, that was a lot of chocolates! The different textures and chocolate intensities - together on one spoonful... well, I'm not even sure if I could accurately describe it to you. You might just have to stop by the stores to taste it for yourself!

In stores today, let us know what you think! If you follow us on Instagram or Twitter, you know that we're also working on a Gluten-Free Blueberry Cream cake. It just needs a few more tweaks (nothing but absolute perfection for our customers!) so we should be able to accept orders in a couple weeks. Here's a sneak peak of what it will look like:

As always, please leave any comments or suggestions in the comments section below. We'll see you in a couple weeks for our first official Gluten-Free cake launch!

*Please note, as with nuts and other allergens, we bake our Gluten-Free and flourless products in the same facility as we bake all of our other goods. Unfortuantely, we are unable to guarantee there was absolutely no cross-contamination. If you have severe allergies, please refrain from consuming our products.

Skip the Chocolates, Go for Chocolate CAKE!

by Regina 30. January 2014 01:58

Unless you celebrated Valentine's Day with us in previous years, chances are you haven't tried our Sweetheart Cake. The reason? It is exclusively available for Valentine's Day only. We get tons of requests throughout the year to make the cake (it's that good) but to make V-Day a little more special, we bake it only in the month of February.

We take our famously decadent chocolate cake, put raspberry jam in between the layers and cover the cake with kirsch cream cheese frosting (made by scratch, of course!). Not only is the icing slightly pink, it has the same loved consistency of our mocha or rum icing but with wonderful fruity flavor!

But if you're looking for something that's all chocolate, we have something for you too. Our Chocolate Hearts are baked from the same chocolate cake and dunked in our chocolate icing (so think our Chocolate on Chocolate). Decorated with some festive pieces and a drizzle of pink (naturally colored!) icing, and you got yourself a Valentine's Day present AND dessert.

We have other options too: chocolate chip cookie hearts, Strawberry Mousse, Raspberry Sandwich hearts, Gingerbread cookies and more. Check out more pictures and info here. Regardless of what you're interested in, please order in advance! We would love to have all orders (not just V-Day ones) at least two days in advance, so that means call us by February 12 at the latest!

Blog Exclusive: Behind the Scenes of Making Buche de Noels!

by Regina 4. December 2013 05:21

Hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is definitely one of my favorite times of the year. We all work crazy hours here at the bakery but it's totally worth it to see you guys come all the way down into our stores just to pick up pies, or dinner rolls or 18 croissants (real order!). This year was truly special because we were recognized as one of the best pies in the Bay Area by San Jose Mercury News. Thanks SJ Merc!

While we will still be offering pies for Christmas and throughout December, what I'd like to share with you today is details on our beautiful Buche de Noels and Yule Logs. I definitely didn't know what these desserts were when I first started working here so for those of you who are in the same boat I was, I'm going to give you everything you need to know right here!

I'll be showing you behind-the-scene photos and step-by-step procedures on how we make these FRESH. This is VERY important because you'd be surprised how many bakeries freeze their cakes, especially the Buche de Noels and Yule Logs since they are pretty labor intensive.

But ours, like any of our other cakes, are NEVER frozen. We ask that you pick-up these items after 2pm on Christmas Eve because we will still be baking and assembling them THAT very morning. Unfortunately, freshness has a price: we can only make limited quantities so once we hit out limit, we're sold out! So pre-orders are required and space is limited.

Basically our Buche de Noels and Yule Logs are rolled up sponge cakes, in a shape of a log. The insides of the Buche de Noel and Yule Logs are exactly the same; they are only decorated differently on the outside. Let's go over the process of the Buche de Noel.

How to Make Buche de Noel

Step 1: First we roll out sponge cake with filling (FACT: We have NINE available flavors for our Buche de Noel!) into one long roll. Then, slice about 1/3 off at a slant to make the shorter leg of the "log"

Step 2: Begin covering the log with freshly molded chocolate. One of the hardest parts about making Buche de Noel is optimal temperatures - temperatures of the melted chocolate and of the mable slab we are working on. Too hot or too cold and we'll have major problems!

Step 3: After we cover the entire log in chocolate, we need to cover up the rest of the cake so it is fully disguised. The includes piping chocolate at the ends of the log (pictured above)

Step 4: This is my favorite part -- dressing up the log! We shape marzipan into little mushrooms and fungi to scatter around the board the cake lies on. We also cut out holly leaves and holly berries to put on top of the log to make it a bit more festive. Lastly, we'll cut out a rectangular plaque so we can write "Noel" or any other message you would like to place on top of the log.

Step 5: The final step is to sprinkle powdered sugar and cocoa powder to give the effect of snow. That's it, now it's done!

We hope you enjoyed these behind-the-scene photos! Remember, quantities are limited so do not wait to place your order (pre-orders are required). If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments section or call one of our stores. Have a great holiday season!

Passover Cakes and Cookies

by Regina 11. March 2013 07:59

Hello March! Seems this year is off to a speedy start and Passover is no exception. We're used to getting Passover orders in April but here, not even mid-March yet, they're starting to trickle in. For anyone who is not near a calendar, the beginning of Passover is just two weeks away!

We do offer two types of cakes and a couple cookies for Passover, all made without traditional flour. Let's start with my favorite, the Strawberry Banana Passover cake.

Let me be honest here. I actually had a taste of this cake for the first time last year. I don't celebrate the holiday and we rarely ever have slices offered so last year when it was available I quickly sliced a piece for myself. I was mind-blown! I never thought I could have cake made without traditional flour that could taste THIS good. The sponge itself is made with matzo meal (which does contain gluten though), potato flour and - the best part - fresh bananas. The ripe bananas is the flavor that really carried throughout and with fresh strawberries, fresh bananas and fresh whipped cream as the filling, I regret that we don't make this cake more often! But it is a Passover exclusive so if you're interested, do come in the store before April 2!

For chocolate lovers, we offer our Chocolate Orange Passover Torte or Cream. Both cakes are made with the same sponge; sponge that is made from potato flour and crushed almonds. It can either be ordered as a Torte in which we only place fresh oranges and strawberries on top, or it can be ordered as a Cream in which we cover it in whipped cream.

We'll also be making our Almond Macaroons, which are also exclusive to this holiday. Made with almond paste, these cookies do not contain flour either. We offer a plain (pictured left) as well as chocolate flavor (pictured middle).

Our day-to-day Coconut Macaroons (pictured right) also are flourless and available to order.

Valentine's Day 2013 just around the corner

by Regina 4. February 2013 04:08

This particular Monday morning is a little bit rougher than usual, isn't it - with the 49ers being so close to winning the Superbowl yesterday. But they played one helluva game. We want to congratulate them on a great season and a great game yesterday. We're proud of you, San Francisco 49ers!

For those still mourning over the loss, we have some sweets to distract you. Plus, Valentine's Day is only 10 short days away so you'll want to read on if you haven't planned anything yet.

What I'm really excited about this year is our Chocolate Chip Cookie Hearts. We made a couple last year to test the waters but didn't really advertise it. We were so happy to learn how well received they were! And at only $6.95 each, they are easy on the wallets. We can decorate them or leave them undecorated - and we can put a custom message too. Just let us know when you place your order over the phone or in-stores.

Last year we also received a record-breaking number of orders for our Chocolate Hearts. It's our award-winning chocolate cake in a shape of a heart and drizzled with some raspberry icing. Please be sure to place an order for any of these items! We do make a handful of extras for last minute walks-in, but the only way to guarantee any of these products is to place an order at least two days in advance. And we did run out last year!

And we of course will be having our Sweetheart Cake available through out the month of February. We receive numerous requests to have this cake year-round but it's a Valentine's Day exclusive. Our chocolate cake is filled with raspberry jam in the middle, then frosted and decorated with Kirsch-Raspberry cream cheese. It's available in all sizes; more information can be found here. (Note: the cake pictured above has been pre-marked for slicing).

Looking for something even easier? Get a red box of our assorted heart-shaped cookies. These boxes are perfect for the office or your group of friends. Choose your own assortment, or we'll be sure to pre-pack some of them next Thursday so you can pop in and pop out without delay. Cookies that are available in heart-shape are: Raspberry Sandwiches, Half Dips and Gingerbread.

We have a few other heart-shaped options including our Strawberry Mousse, Tiramisu Cheesecake and Cream Puffs. There will be limited quantity on each item, especially the Mousse and the Cheesecake so be sure to place an order as soon as you can.

Call the store nearest you today! Don't wait because Thursday, February 14th will be here before you know it.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Holiday Exclusive: Buche de Noels and Yule Logs

by Regina 11. December 2012 04:17

I've mentioned our Buche de Noels and Yule Logs on this blog a couple times in the past but I've never addressed it in depth. Here are all your questions answered about these fun, festive desserts that we only bake this time of year.

The very first thing you need to know is that our Buche de Noel and Yule Logs, like all of our cakes, are made FRESH and never frozen. If you order these for pick-up on Christmas Eve, we ask that you schedule a pick up after 2pm and no earlier because we will still be baking and assembling them that very morning.

Also, because each Buche and log are handcrafted on the very same day (and not pre-frozen like other bakeries!), we can only make a limited quantity. Thus, pre-orders are required, and you want to call as soon as can because we can and will sell out.

And yes, they are available to order for days other than Christmas Eve. We ask that you order at least 2-days in advance for any day that is not December 24th.

Now, on to the dessert itself!

What is a Buche de Noel?

A Buche de Noel is a traditional Christmas dessert made with sponge cake, rolled and decorated into a log, or a tree branch. In addition to the cake, we will also decorate the surroundings on the board with "mushrooms" and "fungi" molded from marzipan. Holly leaves and berries, also made from marzipan, are also placed on the log with a plaque that reads "Noel." We can also inscribe "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas" on the log instead of "Noel", upon request.

What's the difference between a Buche de Noel and a Yule Log?

We always like to offer as many options as possible to our customers. That's why we offer both the Buche de Noel and Yule Log. Both desserts are exactly the same on the inside but while our Buche de Noel is covered in chocolate on the outside, the Yule Log is simply decorated with fresh whipped cream. Both are very presentable desserts - just depends if your guests prefer chocolate or not.

What flavors are they available in?

This is my favorite part. Unlike other bakeries that only offer one or two flavors for Buche de Noels, our bakery offers NINE. Nine different flavors to choose from for a dessert that will definitely get your guests ooh-ing and ahh-ing! I've starred the most popular flavors.

Our Buche de Noel and Yule Log flavors:

  • White Raspberry Cream*
  • Chocolate Raspberry Cream*
  • White Amaretto Cream
  • Chocolate Amaretto Cream
  • Kahlua Mocha Cream*
  • Apricot Brandy Cream*
  • Orange Custard Cream
  • Lemon Custard Cream
  • Lemon Rum Cream

The desserts are decorated the same regardless of the flavor with the exception of the Yule Log in Kahlua Mocha. That is decorated with a cocoa whipped cream (below) instead of white.

What's the sizing and pricing?

Buche de Noel, small (serves 8-10): $57.25; Yule Log: $46.95

Buche de Noel, large (serves 16-18): $79.25; Yule Log: $59.50

(Pricing may change without notice. Please visit our website for the most up-to-date information.)

Here are some sneak-peak photos on how we assemble these holiday desserts:

Sponge filled, rolled and ready to be decorated!

Completely covering the roll in chocolate

Sprinkling "snow"!

Remember, these Buche de Noels and Yule Logs must be pre-ordered, available at all our locations: Palo Alto, Saratoga, Santa Clara and Fremont. Interested in dessert but not these logs? Please visit our website for other popular items like our Panettone and pies!

Happy Holidays!
