Voted Among THE BEST Pumpkin Pies in Bay Area

by Regina 3. November 2014 02:00

Thanks again for SJMN for voting us among the BEST for Pumpkin Pies. We can't believe it's been a year since then already.

Those who haven't been with us for a while may grow wide-eyed at our pie prices. Why would you pay $14.25 for a Pumpkin Pie with us, when you can purchase one that's twice as big for half as much at Costco? And the reason is this: you get what you pay for.

I love Costco, I love it. I will make any excuse to go there and buy anything I can in bulk. But when I pass by the bakery section, I always wonder how they can sell THAT many of everything. THAT many cookies, THAT much bread, THAT many pies? But recently I took a closer look at their packaging, and you might be surprised what you'll find if you do.

First, there's a Sell By date. And usually, that date isn't today. If you sift through the piles of pies, you'll find a range of dates. Some will be sell by today, some by tomorrow or even 2-3 days from now. This isn't exclusive to Costco; you'll see this often at many supermarket bakeries like Safeway, Smart & Final, etc. And to be completely fair, there are some baked goods that are even better the next day, when all the flavors have had time to sit and muddle together. So a pie that isn't baked the same day is far from the worst thing. But then the question that begs to be asked is: how many days exactly has it been sitting there?

Secondly, and actually more importantly, knowing full well the rising costs of dairy (which has jumped significantly due to the drought), eggs and sugar, how can these supermarket bakeries afford to sell their pies for so cheap? And that's when you need to take a closer look at the ingredient list, that is so much longer than what it should be. Some supermarket bakeries are better than others. Costco, for example, was a pretty decent list up until the end where there were words that I never heard of, let alone able to pronounce. But some other bakeries... did you know you can use egg substitutes?! And some bakeries use "whipped cream" that comes out of a bucket that doesn't need to be refrigerated? Let me repeat that one more time: whipped CREAM that DOESN'T need to be refrigerated!

These are the reasons why our pies cost a little extra, but are well worth it in terms of what is good for us and our families. When we say our pies are natural, we mean it! We don't add any artificial flavors, artificial colors OR preservatives. We use real butter, real eggs, real sugar (is there a thing as fake sugar? Probably, but we wouldn't know!) in all of our products. Our products, not refrigerated or kept in proper settings, WILL spoil because we don't add preservatives or additives to extend their shelf-life. But don't worry about that, given the quality and expectations we set for ourselves, you really shouldn't have any leftovers on Thanksgivng ;)

Hope you will give our pies a try this year, if you haven't already. Is there a pie that you love that's missing on our list? Leave a comment below and we'll see what we can do. Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving Turkey Meal for Home or Office!

by Regina 6. November 2013 06:26

Turkey Day is almost here! Don't wait until the last minute to plan your Thanksgiving meal, whether it's for your family and friends, or for your work event -- we can help you with both!

Whether you are serving 15 guests or 200, our Turkey Packages are easy and include the essentials to serve 15-18 each:

  • Whole Turkey or pre-carved for convenience
  • Homemade Cornbread Stuffing
  • Hand-mashed potatoes
  • Gravy (made from scratch!)
  • 24 Dinner Rolls

So if you're serving 30 guests, order two packages. For 150 guests? 10 packages! But we also realize that it may not be as easy as that. Maybe you need to cater to some vegetarians, or maybe you want a larger variety of food, maybe have a dessert bar (great idea, by the way!). That's why we're here to help and happy to create custom quotes and menu proposals. Just call our Catering Managers with basic details: how many guests, date and time and basic requirements, and we can take care of everything else.

What's "everything else"? Well, not to overwhelm you, but here are a few things you might not have thought of:

  1. Food is served HOT and ready to eat! No pre-heating is necessary
  2. We can deliver, and it's FREE if you are within 1-mile of our store
  3. One stop for both meal AND dessert!
  4. Made from scratch in-house without artificial flavors, artificial colors or preservatives added!

Quantities are limited so please call as you can! Please press 2 for the Catering Manager when you are prompted.

Holiday Gift Ideas

by Regina 4. December 2011 07:38

Holiday shopping can be a pain sometimes. The crowds, the lines and not to mention the headache over finding the perfect gift for your loved ones. Whoever that may be - maybe a parent or a sibling, a friend or a co-worker - skip the mall and head to one of our four convenient locations.

Let's start with co-workers or managers first. Our Holiday Cookie Tins or Cookie Baskets are perfect for the office. The best part is they're customizable to your needs. Choose to do a tin of six cookies, a basket of 100 (the perfect gift from one company to another) or any number of cookies in-between. Mini assorted, regular-size assorted, Gingerbread, our special Holiday-only cookies - the choice is all yours. You can give (and therefore spend!) as little or as much as you'd like. Any way you go, the cookies are baked freshly every day and packed with care.

A great gift for family members or neighbors alike - which many of our customers are already taking advantage of - is our Naturally Aged Fruitcakes. Our fruitcakes are made with raisins, currants, almonds, walnuts, figs, dates, prunes and a bit of fresh orange peel. They were baked in October so they could be naturally aged with brandy, which means we don't add any preservatives unlike other places. Even without additives these fruitcakes, because of the real alcohol, will last you throughout the year and into January. Because they were baked to be aged, we only have a limited supply left. Pick up a pre-wrapped box today at the stores or call ahead to place a hold.

And there's always our Gift Cards. Available at Palo Alto, Santa Clara and Fremont locations, purchase as many cards as you need for any amount (over $10, increments of $5) that is available to redeem at any of those three locations with no expiry dates. This gift is perfect for those who frequent our locations for breakfast or lunch, or maybe you know they love our cakes but you don't know which one. The Gift Card is fast, easy and yet still thoughtful.

Stay tuned for our next post... maybe you don't need gift ideas but you've been asked to bring dessert to dinner. I'll be making some recommendations and giving details about the cakes we exclusively make during this holiday season. Until then, keep warm!
