Holiday Exclusive: Buche de Noels and Yule Logs

by Regina 11. December 2012 04:17

I've mentioned our Buche de Noels and Yule Logs on this blog a couple times in the past but I've never addressed it in depth. Here are all your questions answered about these fun, festive desserts that we only bake this time of year.

The very first thing you need to know is that our Buche de Noel and Yule Logs, like all of our cakes, are made FRESH and never frozen. If you order these for pick-up on Christmas Eve, we ask that you schedule a pick up after 2pm and no earlier because we will still be baking and assembling them that very morning.

Also, because each Buche and log are handcrafted on the very same day (and not pre-frozen like other bakeries!), we can only make a limited quantity. Thus, pre-orders are required, and you want to call as soon as can because we can and will sell out.

And yes, they are available to order for days other than Christmas Eve. We ask that you order at least 2-days in advance for any day that is not December 24th.

Now, on to the dessert itself!

What is a Buche de Noel?

A Buche de Noel is a traditional Christmas dessert made with sponge cake, rolled and decorated into a log, or a tree branch. In addition to the cake, we will also decorate the surroundings on the board with "mushrooms" and "fungi" molded from marzipan. Holly leaves and berries, also made from marzipan, are also placed on the log with a plaque that reads "Noel." We can also inscribe "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas" on the log instead of "Noel", upon request.

What's the difference between a Buche de Noel and a Yule Log?

We always like to offer as many options as possible to our customers. That's why we offer both the Buche de Noel and Yule Log. Both desserts are exactly the same on the inside but while our Buche de Noel is covered in chocolate on the outside, the Yule Log is simply decorated with fresh whipped cream. Both are very presentable desserts - just depends if your guests prefer chocolate or not.

What flavors are they available in?

This is my favorite part. Unlike other bakeries that only offer one or two flavors for Buche de Noels, our bakery offers NINE. Nine different flavors to choose from for a dessert that will definitely get your guests ooh-ing and ahh-ing! I've starred the most popular flavors.

Our Buche de Noel and Yule Log flavors:

  • White Raspberry Cream*
  • Chocolate Raspberry Cream*
  • White Amaretto Cream
  • Chocolate Amaretto Cream
  • Kahlua Mocha Cream*
  • Apricot Brandy Cream*
  • Orange Custard Cream
  • Lemon Custard Cream
  • Lemon Rum Cream

The desserts are decorated the same regardless of the flavor with the exception of the Yule Log in Kahlua Mocha. That is decorated with a cocoa whipped cream (below) instead of white.

What's the sizing and pricing?

Buche de Noel, small (serves 8-10): $57.25; Yule Log: $46.95

Buche de Noel, large (serves 16-18): $79.25; Yule Log: $59.50

(Pricing may change without notice. Please visit our website for the most up-to-date information.)

Here are some sneak-peak photos on how we assemble these holiday desserts:

Remember, these Buche de Noels and Yule Logs must be pre-ordered, available at all our locations: Palo Alto, Saratoga, Santa Clara and Fremont. Interested in dessert but not these logs? Please visit our website for other popular items like our Panettone and pies!

Happy Holidays!

Holiday Catering: Tri-Tip Steak

by Regina 3. December 2012 02:24

Since our Thanksgiving Catering was such a hit this year - we sold out of them, thank you to all who purchased in advance! - we decided to offer a special for your Holiday Parties this month too!

We are getting a lot of calls about turkeys for this month actually and although we theortically could prepare it, we unfortunately wouldn't be able to honor the pricing we had for Thanksgiving. We were able to keep costs low due to turkeys being in season and our vendors having special pricing. But now with the main turkey holiday over, prices for whole turkeys have at least doubled.

Instead we are offering steak for catering, which in my opinion is a bit fancier and, plus, people might be tired of turkey already. The Tri-Tip Steak Catering is a spin-off of one of Fremont's specials that they are correctly offering. Here's a look at our Fremont special going on this month:

The Catering version is the same with just one exception: instead of the country potatoes you see pictured above, the Tri-Tip catering will include mashed potatoes. The Tri-Tip is pre-carved for your convenience and the sauce, a red wine reduction with fresh sauteed mushrooms, will be be delivered on the side. Once we arrive at your office (or home!), we will pour the sauce onto the steak to keep it warm. Also included in the catering package is a side of sauteed vegetables and hand-mashed potatoes.

We did sell out of turkeys for Thanksgiving so please make sure you place orders in advance! We, of course, will also have available our regular Catering menu, found here

To place an order, please call the store nearest you and press 2 to speak to our Catering Manager. Also don't forget about dessert! Our Buche de Noels are perfect to impress your co-workers at holiday parties:

Stay tuned for more holiday posts!

Holiday Cookie Gifts with Exclusive Cookies, including Hanukkah

by Regina 28. November 2012 03:34

Theoretically you can gift cookies any time of the year, but why is it so much better to do so during the holidays? Maybe it's the spirit of giving, or maybe it's the festive packaging - either way it's the perfect gift to give and the perfect gift to receive... Especially when the cookies are made from scratch and baked fresh every morning (sometimes multiple times a day!), like ours.

You have a couple different options with us, depending on how many cookies you'd like. If you just want to surprise your co-worker with a little bag of goodies on your way back from lunch, we can pack a couple cookies into a little baggie for you, tie a ribbon around it and call it in a day. Each store has several festive designs for the bags so make sure you ask to see them all!

If you're looking for more than just a couple of cookies, our red cookie boxes can fit about a dozen (depending on the cookies). With this option, you are completely free to choose what assortment and how many cookies you'd like -- there is just a small fee for the box and accompanying bow. This is a great gift for friends!

But maybe you're looking for something a little nicer. Something for your boss or supervisor? We have a large variety of cookie tins to choose from. Small or large, choose the size you think is right for you. We can fill them up with mini cookies, regular size cookies or decorated Gingerbread cookies. We have presets to make choosing easy, or make your own assortment if you'd like.

Any option you choose, the recepient will be receiving freshly baked cookies made with only natural ingredients - no artificial flavors or colors or preservatives. For a gift that is relatively easy for you (all you need to do is walk into our store!), your thoughtfulness and generosity will not go unnoticed.

We also bake a few cookies exclusively this time of year: Gingerbread, Mexican Wedding Cookies (also known as Russian Tea Cakes or Italian Butter Nuts) and Spritz Cookies (also known as Swedish Butter Cookies). Our Gingerbread are available in various shapes and sizes, from small boys and girls to Hanukkah shapes of dreidels and menorahs, to large gingerbread men. Because we use high-quality butter that is essential to the recipe, both our Mexican Wedding Cookies and Spritz Cookies have really great depth in their flavors. Personally they are my favorite cookies that we make and only available this time of year!

Like with all our products, I encourage you to call in to place an order in advance. We'll have cookies and supplies on hand but can't guarantee that we won't run out! And if you need multiple boxes or tins, please do call us so we can bake to order for you. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Until my next post, stay warm!

Your Thanksgiving Party At Home

by Regina 13. November 2012 03:10

Happy November! Finally, the weather has turned chilly enough to convince me that the holidays are just around the corner. Actually, one of these holidays is just around the weekend! It's hard for me to believe that another Thanksgiving is here but the high number of pie orders we've been receiving daily are helping. Thank you to all those who have already placed their Thanksgiving orders. For those of you who haven't, what are you waiting for?

Before we talk about desserts though, let's make sure you have your main course ready and out of the way. For just $116.95 per package, we can have a whole turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy hot and ready for pick-up. Each package served 15-18 each, which means your meal can cost as low as $6.50 per serving. If you're interested I would call as soon as you can. Quantities are limited and the slots are filling up fast. Order as many packages or just one - whatever you need. Call our stores and press 2 to speak to our Catering Manager.

And don't forget dessert! While we will have some extras on hand on Wednesday and Thursday, please don't wait to call your order in! Place an order in advance to guarantee the items you want. Remember, our Palo Alto store will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Fremont and Santa Clara stores are open to serve brunch until 2pm.

All of our pies are made in-house, from scratch. Check out this picture I snapped one year while the baker's were preparing Cherry Pies:

And then the finished product, with NO artificial flavors or colors or preservatives!

Other goods that are popular include our Chocolate Decadence, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Pumpkin Cake and Apple or Cherry Strudels (for the next morning!). Don't forget to order some dinner rolls for your meal, too. Please place your orders as soon as you can, and we'll see you next week. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Thanksgiving Turkey Catering for Company Parties

by Regina 12. October 2012 04:24

This post is specifically for our Corporate customers who may need turkey catering for their office parties, but don't worry, another blog will come soon for those of you who only need catering for your home.

I want you first to take a deep breath. Whether you are planning for a group of 20 or for 200, planning for your office's Thanksgiving party can be overwhelming, to say the least. You might have been asking yourself, "Where do I even start?" Well, I'm glad you landed on this blog post -- this is a great place to start!

Not only are we able to cater the meal itself (with turkey and other fixings) but we're originally a bakery (going on 32 years now!) and will be baking some amazing desserts for this holiday. But let's start with the meal first.

For convenience, we've organized our meal into a package that serves 15-18 people. This way you can order as many or as little packages as you need. For a group of only 15? One package is perfect. Group of 150? Order 10 packages!

--Turkeys right out of the oven for a corporate event last year--

Each package includes:

  • 16lb+ whole turkey
  • homemade cornbread stuffing
  • handmashed potatoes
  • made-from-scratch gravy

That was the easy part. Now, the bigger your party, the more people you'll have to try to satisfy. Maybe there are some who are opposed to turkey, but like ham -- so we offer a Honeyed Ham served with our own homemade pineapple sauce. Maybe you have some vegetarians in the group? No problem, we have several vegetarian dishes to choose from including a Vegetable Tofu Plate and vegetarian pastas. Are we concerned about added some greens to the meal? We can add Sauteed Vegetables or salad on the side. What about some carbs? We also make fabulous dinner rolls, available in white or wheat.

And this is important: our food comes HOT AND READY TO EAT. A customer last year told me she once ordered turkey catering from another company and when she picked it up at lunch time, it was COLD! Not only will our meal be delivered hot (free delivery within 1-mile!), you can also request to have it pre-carved for only $10 more.

Whatever your needs are, we'll try to accomodate. Still feeling overwhelmed? Feel free to put the pressure on us. Give our Catering Manager a call and just specify the bare minimum: date and time of party, how many guests and any special requests (such as vegetarian dishes required) and we'll take care of it! Our Catering Managers will put together a customized menu for you and work with you until you are completely satisfied with what will be served this Thanksgiving.

On to my favorite part: the desserts! Because Pumpkin Pies are pretty much a must-have at Thanksgiving lunch or dinner, we offer a special on our Pumpkin Pies when you order the Turkey Package: 2 for $19.99. At an original price of $13.25 each, that's nearly a buy one get one half off deal.

But maybe you'll want a variety and that we can also help with. We bake a couple other pies: Apple, Cherry, Pecan, Chocolate Cream and Banana Cream (my personal favorite). All of our pies are baked from scratch, without the use of any artificial flavors or preservatives. That's what I love about our pies - made fresh with the everyday ingredients you can find in your grandma's kitchen.

Outside of pies we make a great Pumpkin Cheesecake, Pumpkin Cake, and we also tweak our Pablo Tarts to be a little bit more festive:

--Please be sure to request "turkey design" upon ordering--

Check out the full range of desserts that we recommend for Thanksgiving here. Ready to place and order or have additional questions? Please call our stores and speak to our Catering Manager.

July 4th: festive desserts without any food coloring

by Regina 17. June 2012 05:23

If you follow this blog or our twitter, you know that we often stress the fact that we do not add any food coloring to our cakes or pastries. Artificial coloring may not be something you think twice about, but if you do you'll realize not many bakeries bake or decorate without it nowadays. I can't say I don't understand the use of it because it is obviously appealing to the eyes but for our store, we simply cannot compromise our quality by adding anything unnatural. Keeping away from the artificial and superficial, we believe, keeps our products safe and healthy for you and your family.

With that said, we get really excited during the summer because we're able to add a lot more color to our products through the use of fruit. Real, fresh fruit that is cut every single morning. So throughout the season you'll see our Strawberry Cream Cakes, more Trifle Cups, more Banana Custard Creams and now, our brand new Very Berry Trifle Cake (see our last post).

And for July 4th, we're able to be a little more festive too. Specifically for Independence Day we make a few more desserts that we think are both delicious and decorative.

First, we can decorate our Banana Custard Creams like the flag upon request. Because the cake is already a rectagular shape (for 1/4 sheets and up), the flag looks perfect on the top.

Last year we also started decorating cupcakes this way as well. Using fresh blueberries, raspberry jam and white cream cheese icing we're able to replicate the flag on top of our white cake cupcakes. Very cute and a huge hit if you're having a BBQ or friends over.

And because berries are so sweet during this time of the year, we're switching up our Trifle Cup fillings. Instead of the usual strawberries with chocolate cake, this July 4th special has bits of our Orange Almond cake, fresh blueberries, fresh vanilla custard and fresh strawberries.

Similarly, our brand new Very Berry Trifle Cake is also packed full of fresh berries - perfect for any summer affair.

I always say that any holiday - no matter how small or big - is a legitimate excuse to be having dessert. If you agree, please order these items in advance to ensure we will have them for you. We hope you'll enjoy these festive treats and Happy 4th of July!

Introducing our newest cake, just in time for Father's Day

by Regina 15. June 2012 01:57

We're very excited to be debuting our brand new creation right before Father's Day. This cake, what we will be calling our Very Berry Trifle Cake, was inspired by the beautiful summer weather we've been enjoying in the Bay Area. I wanted to create a dessert that would be a good fit at any summer celebration - whether that be this Father's Day, or July 4th, or just any regular weekend BBQ you may be hosting.

It was important for the cake to be "summer-y". When I think of summer, two things immediately come to mind: sweet fruits and the hot sun. Because of the heat, I didn't want the cake to be too heavy or incorporate any whipped cream. Our lighter French Style cakes are a great option for summer time, but I didn't want to have to worry about the cream melting (note: we freshly whip our cream, made with heavy cream and sugar only - so it must be refrigerated!).

I also wanted the cake to be fairly simple. Despite having several layers like a trifle, the cake is undoubtedly simplistic yet full of flavor. All of the components are homemade, made from scratch. The compote (really a fancy word for cooked fruit in a syrup or sauce consistency) is made with real berries, sugar and water - no artificial colors or flavors added. Then we fill the cake with fresh berries of all sorts: strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries.

We hope you'll enjoy our newest product as much as we do. Keep in mind that because we do use fresh fruits in the cake, this product will be seasonal only and won't be available year-round. Better take advantage now and order one for Father's Day this weekend! If you do, please be sure to let us know what you think in the comment section below.

Speaking of Father's Day, please join us at Rivermark or Fremont locations for brunch, which will be served until 3pm! Fremont will also be offering $1.99 Mimosas and $1.99 Beers all day Sunday. Hope to see you there!

Novelty Graduation Cakes without compromising quality

by Regina 16. May 2012 08:12

Truth be told, it's very hard for us to make any "novelty" cakes for special occasions because we refuse to compromise the quality of our cakes. This includes adding artificial food coloring (or artificial flavoring) and the use of fondant, which may look nice but doesn't quite meet our standards.

Thankfully we can offer a Graduation Cake that is still fun, unique and elegant without having to compromise our recipes or traditions. We were able to design a cake that mimics that of a graduation cap and place that on top of a sheet cake for optimal servings - perfect for graduation parties! Our graduation caps are made out of the same quality cakes we always bake, with a little added help of a decorated board and a real tassel.

Now of course the board and the tassel aren't edible, but the rest of the cap is!

We bake a whole range of sizes for graduation, from 20 servings to over 100. Please see our website for pricing and serving information, or call our stores to place an order.

Because we are stacking cakes, we are only able to make our Cap N Tassel graduation cakes in our American Style flavors only. This includes: Chocolate on Chocolate, Chocolate Mocha, Chocolate Rum, Chocolate Orange Almond, Orange Almond, Carrot, Zucchini, Poppyseed, Lady Regina and Lady Baltimore.

Pre-orders are required so please call us! Congratulations to all 2012 graduates!

Mother's Day: featuring Mimosas and Banana Custard Cream

by Regina 1. May 2012 04:30

Mother's Day is less than two weeks away! Plan to order your mom the very best - handcrafted cakes that are baked without added preservatives, without artificial flavors, without artificial flavors. This year we are featuring our Banana Custard Cream, a house favorite. This is actually my go-to cake, especially if we're going for chocolate-cake-alternative. Although it's a light French Style cake, it's carrying some real and natural flavors.

We specifically bake a banana-almond sponge just to craft this cake. Between the layers of banana-almond sponge lies a thick layer of fresh banana custard, which, like all of our cakes, is also handmade from scratch. The cake is then layered with freshly cut seasonal fruit, just a bit of fresh whipped cream on the sides and toasted sliced almonds.

It's light in texture but filled with natural fruit flavors, which makes this cake perfect for this spring weather and great for Mother's Day.

If you aren't having a family gathering that requires cake, then join us for brunch at our Santa Clara or Fremont locations, served until 3pm. If you plan on joining us at our Fremont location, don't miss out on our $1.99 Mimosa deal for Mother's Day only.

Hope to see you there!
