Voted Among THE BEST Pumpkin Pies in Bay Area

by Regina 3. November 2014 02:00

Thanks again for SJMN for voting us among the BEST for Pumpkin Pies. We can't believe it's been a year since then already.

Those who haven't been with us for a while may grow wide-eyed at our pie prices. Why would you pay $14.25 for a Pumpkin Pie with us, when you can purchase one that's twice as big for half as much at Costco? And the reason is this: you get what you pay for.

I love Costco, I love it. I will make any excuse to go there and buy anything I can in bulk. But when I pass by the bakery section, I always wonder how they can sell THAT many of everything. THAT many cookies, THAT much bread, THAT many pies? But recently I took a closer look at their packaging, and you might be surprised what you'll find if you do.

First, there's a Sell By date. And usually, that date isn't today. If you sift through the piles of pies, you'll find a range of dates. Some will be sell by today, some by tomorrow or even 2-3 days from now. This isn't exclusive to Costco; you'll see this often at many supermarket bakeries like Safeway, Smart & Final, etc. And to be completely fair, there are some baked goods that are even better the next day, when all the flavors have had time to sit and muddle together. So a pie that isn't baked the same day is far from the worst thing. But then the question that begs to be asked is: how many days exactly has it been sitting there?

Secondly, and actually more importantly, knowing full well the rising costs of dairy (which has jumped significantly due to the drought), eggs and sugar, how can these supermarket bakeries afford to sell their pies for so cheap? And that's when you need to take a closer look at the ingredient list, that is so much longer than what it should be. Some supermarket bakeries are better than others. Costco, for example, was a pretty decent list up until the end where there were words that I never heard of, let alone able to pronounce. But some other bakeries... did you know you can use egg substitutes?! And some bakeries use "whipped cream" that comes out of a bucket that doesn't need to be refrigerated? Let me repeat that one more time: whipped CREAM that DOESN'T need to be refrigerated!

These are the reasons why our pies cost a little extra, but are well worth it in terms of what is good for us and our families. When we say our pies are natural, we mean it! We don't add any artificial flavors, artificial colors OR preservatives. We use real butter, real eggs, real sugar (is there a thing as fake sugar? Probably, but we wouldn't know!) in all of our products. Our products, not refrigerated or kept in proper settings, WILL spoil because we don't add preservatives or additives to extend their shelf-life. But don't worry about that, given the quality and expectations we set for ourselves, you really shouldn't have any leftovers on Thanksgivng ;)

Hope you will give our pies a try this year, if you haven't already. Is there a pie that you love that's missing on our list? Leave a comment below and we'll see what we can do. Happy Holidays!

Saratoga Store to Close Oct 29th

by Regina 10. October 2014 11:25

It is both with tremendous gratitute and regret to announce that our Saratoga store will be closing its doors later this month, on October 29th.

Saratoga was the second location established by our family, back in April 2000, nearly 15 years ago. We have enjoyed serving the residents of Saratoga over the last decade so much and appreciate your patronage in our small family business. It has been wonderful to see our regular customers accumulate over the years, and a real pleasure to serve your coffee, pastries and lunch. Thank you so much for choosing us as your bakery and coffeehouse of choice.

With the holidays right around the corner, please continue to see us at our other locations in the Bay Area for your favorite chocolate cakes and Thanksgiving pies. We have locations in Santa Clara, Fremont and Palo Alto. We are also very excited to announce a new location in downtown Sunnyvale in early 2015.

Thank you again, and hope to see you soon!

Dinner for 2 at Fremont for only $25 starting Friday, July 18

by Regina 14. July 2014 04:45

[EDIT 10/1/14: This promotion has now expired but follow us on Twitter or Facebook to be up-to-date on future promotions!]

By now you are probably already familiar with the "Dinner for 2" concept that some other restaurants are running. We admit we definitely aren't the first ones who came up with the idea, but we have tweaked our menu to make it the most incredible value and deal saver! While our neighbor at Applebee's only offers a shared appetizer and two entrees (only 2-courses!), we definitely didn't want you leaving hungry. That's why we have decided to make our Dinner for 2 promo a 4-course meal. That's right, four! And that's not $25 per person, that's a 4-course meal for 2 people for $25 total!

To start, a choice of appetizers to share. The options include three of our popular menu items: Bruschetta, Fried Zuchini and wings, but also a brand new starter, Mozzarellea Sticks, that are only available in this promo. Then, a choice of our fresh soups of the day or a garden salad. Did you know that all our soups and made from scratch, in house? No pre-made soups, no soup starters, no artificial flavors or any preservatives.

Next comes the main course, the entree. We just updated our lunch specials at Fremont last week to include the Berry Summer Salad (VERY popular - a must try if you haven't!), Steak Caprese Salad (back by popular demand as well) and Summer Linguine. These three items are available on the Dinner for 2 menu. In addition, we are including three more dishes that will only be available during this promotion (not offered during lunch hours): Tri-Tip Steak, Almond-Crusted Tilapia and a brand new Parmesan-Chicken Penne.

By the fourth course we hope you are stuffed as can be, but since we are a bakery, we have to include dessert (plus, there's a separate stomach for sweets, so they say!). Your set meal will include a slice of the Cake of the Day. Each day will be different depending on the day's inventory so please ask the cashier what you can expect.

There it is, four-courses for two people for only $25. It's a crazy good deal so it won't be around for long! Starts this Friday so come join us for dinner (after 5pm, in-store only) before the promotion runs out! Other restrictions might apply, see our cashiers for more information.

July 4th Weekend - Yes, We're Open!

by Regina 23. June 2014 05:33

All of our stores will be open until 5pm on Friday, July 4th. Before you fire up those BBQ grills, stop by our Rivermark/Santa Clara or Fremont locations for HOLIDAY BRUNCH! Breakfast usually ends at 10:30am on weekdays but since it's a holiday, we will extend breakfast hours until 3pm. After 3pm, we'll remain open until 5pm for anyone who needs to pick up desserts for your July 4th parties. (Please note: Palo Alto will not be serving lunch)

Here are some dessert ideas, inspired by Independence Day:

Cupcakes with the American flag! These are our "white" cupcakes pictured above but we can replicate it on any cupcake.

These July-4th-inspired Trifle Cups only show up once a year and they are my favorite variation. Orange Almond cake, fresh blueberries, vanilla custard and fresh strawberries. Pre-order these if you want them because they'll be gone!

Lastly, ask us to decorate your sheet cakes like the American Flag, made with fresh raspberries and blueberries, for a small fee. The cake shown above is the Banana Custard Cream but the White Strawberry Cream is very popular this time of year (with fresh strawberries!) as is our Very Berry Trifle Cake (seasonal).

As always, please place your orders at least 2-days in advance to guarantee most items. Hope everyone has a relaxing and safe 3-day weekend!

Cap N Tassel Cake Perfect for your Graduate

by Regina 2. June 2014 06:57

It's been so nice seeing graduation orders coming in for your loved ones. This is one of my favorite parts of the year because no matter how busy our schedules are (and they always are - busy, aren't they?) we make time to get together to celebrate the loved ones that we are so proud of. Oh, and of course great food and cake ;)

If your loved one's graduation is still coming up, make sure you order our very special Cap N Tassel cake. Available for servings of 20-100, this cake will surely impress both your graduate and your guests. The "graduation cap" is actually mostly made of out of cake, so it's edible, with just a little bit of help from a board and tassel (not edible, haha).

Pre-ordered is required as we will only be baking these cakes to order. Please place you orders at least 2-days in advance. The Cap N Tassel cake is available in eight different flavors: Chocolate on Chocolate, Chocolate Rum, Chocolate Mocha, Orange Almond, Chocolate Orange Almond, Carrot, Lady Regina and Lady Baltimore.

If you have any other questions, please call us at the respective  stores to speak to an associate. Congratulations Class of 2014!

Show Your Mom You Heart Her!

by Regina 5. May 2014 07:54

Mother's Day is THIS Sunday and we have plenty of options for you to celebrate with her!

First, we'll be serving brunch at our Santa Clara/Rivermark and Fremont/Pacific Commons locations until 3pm. Normally we have a first-come, first-serve policy by our Fremont store is taking reservations for parties over 6 for Mother's Day. Fremont will also be serving $1.99 MIMOSAS, so come in and drink up! Please call the store directly to make reservations: 510-252-1098.

Whether you will be eating brunch (or dinner!) with us or not, make sure you pre-order your dessert. We will have some extras on hand, but to guarantee the cake you want make sure you place your order at least two-days in advance. Here are my favorites and recommendations for moms:

Tiramisu Cheesecake - by far my mother's favorite cake! Perfect balance of Tiramisu and our rich, dense cheesecake

Or better yet, our Tiramisu Cheesecake in a shape of a heart!

Chocolate Hearts - originally made exclusively for Valentine's Day but what better way to show your mom you heart her?

Banana Custard Cream (pictured unfinished above): light but full of flavor, perfect for the summer!

Passover, Easter and a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

by Regina 15. April 2014 02:53

Hello blogosphere! Just wanted to jump on here to make a few annoucements because the 140 character limit on Twitter was, well, limiting!

Firstly, don't forget that Easter Sunday is THIS Sunday! Please be sure to pre-order your Hot Cross Buns because we will run out. There is no minimum for an order so even if you need just six, please call it in by Friday so we can reserve them for you. We never want to turn any customers away, but we really do at least two-days to be able to guanantee your items.

Secondly, we are still accepting Passover orders through April 22. Even if you don't observe the Jewish holiday, I urge everyone to still give them a try. If you are a fan of almonds, marzipan or almond paste, you will love our Almond Macaroons. The main ingredient is - yup, you guessed it - premium almond paste.  If you also love chocolate, you might like our Chocolate Macaroons even better. All of a macaroons (Almond, Chocolate and our daily Coconut) are gluten-free!

Actually the other two cakes we offer for Passover are also made with almonds. The Chocolate Orange Torte and Chocolate Orange Cream is completely flourless so it relies pretty heavily on ground almonds, making this cake a little dry naturally. On the flipside, our Passover Strawberry Banana Cream is quite moist (and my favorite!) from the fresh bananas we use in the batter. Filled with fresh strawberries and fresh bananas, I wish we baked this cake year-round!

Lastly, a huge announcement! This Friday we will be debuting our first gluten-free cake! If you follow this blog or our Twitter, you might have seen a few sneak-peak photos of it but after several weeks of tweaking and perfecting, we think this cake is ready for you! Are you ready for it?

Using a gluten-free all-purpose flour and real blueberries, we were able to make a sponge that was airy and tasty. The best part? We didn't have to break our no artificial colors or artificial flavors rule to make this cake! It's still a beautiful blue sponge but it is 100% naturally colored.

We wanted to keep the cake light and simple. We sprinkled the blueberry sponge with a little bit of real blueberry juice and filled it with fresh whipped cream and chopped up blueberries. Decorated with whipped cream and some fresh fruit, the cake is perfect for the summer!

We had been very hesitant to experiment with gluten-free products because we felt it was quite difficult to make some gluten-free and natural that tasted delicious - not good, not acceptable but delicious! We're so happy to say we proved ourselves wrong and hope you agree.

This cake will be in our stores starting this Friday, available to purchase by the slice. We'll also be giving away a limited supply of samples right before lunch if you would like to stop by for a taste. Let us know what you think! The cake will be available for ordering starting this Friday too, just in time for Easter. Please note because this is such a special cake, we will ONLY bake-to-order and require a minimum of 2-days notice. Hope you love it as much as we do!

Don't forget about our Passover selection!

by Regina 9. April 2014 07:33

Last year I wrote about my first time trying our Passover Strawberry Banana Cream cake and though it's made with Matzo meal and potato starch instead of traditional wheat flour, in keeping with Passover traditions, the cake was delicious and full of flavor! I can't wait until I can have another slice and thankfully, I don't have to wait much longer.

With the beginning of Passover just around the weekend, don't forget to check out our Passover page on the website to find details on our products. We are offering a Strawberry Banana Cream, a Chocolate Orange Torte (no cream, pictured below), a Chocolate Orange Cream and three macaroon variations: Almond, Chocolate and Coconut!

We'll try to have extras on hand but, as always, it's always best to place an order 2-days in advance if you know you'll be needing something. Remember, Passover starts on Monday, April 14!

Our First Official Flourless Dessert: Chocolate Verrines

by Regina 14. March 2014 04:16

Today marks the launch date of our first official flourless dessert! You've been asking and asking for gluten-free desserts and finally, with much anticipation, we launched our first dessert today.

Our Chocolate Verrine is perfect for a chocolate-holic, eating gluten-free or not. It is a chocolate-lover's dream in a cup. First, we start with a thick layer of our decadent chocolate ganache, then a generous portion of a newly developed chocolate mousse and finally topped off with chocolate whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles. Phew, that was a lot of chocolates! The different textures and chocolate intensities - together on one spoonful... well, I'm not even sure if I could accurately describe it to you. You might just have to stop by the stores to taste it for yourself!

In stores today, let us know what you think! If you follow us on Instagram or Twitter, you know that we're also working on a Gluten-Free Blueberry Cream cake. It just needs a few more tweaks (nothing but absolute perfection for our customers!) so we should be able to accept orders in a couple weeks. Here's a sneak peak of what it will look like:

As always, please leave any comments or suggestions in the comments section below. We'll see you in a couple weeks for our first official Gluten-Free cake launch!

*Please note, as with nuts and other allergens, we bake our Gluten-Free and flourless products in the same facility as we bake all of our other goods. Unfortuantely, we are unable to guarantee there was absolutely no cross-contamination. If you have severe allergies, please refrain from consuming our products.
